I have been a Registered Massage Therapist in North Bay since 1990. I have studied and become skilled at a number of massage therapy and body work treatment styles to help my clients heal, relax and improve their quality of life and health.  I usually combine modalities within a single treatment because injury or illness often affects the person at many levels so a single style of addressing the body may not be enough to create meaningful change in the client's body.  As I am not able to predict what combination of skills will work best at any given treatment so I only charge for my time and skill rather than the specific modalities that are used in a session.

The different types of treatments that I use are listed in the pages of this website, I hope that you enjoy your exploration around my site and would be happy to answer any questions that you might have about what I offer at my clinic.

MASSAGE THERAPY:

Caring Treatments Massage Therapy has been treating stress and pain since 1990. Over the past 25 years of providing massage therapy in North Bay I have seen wonderful results in a large variety of client's health challenges. I was one of the first Massage Therapists in North Bay and hope to be serving the community with skill, knowledge and experience for many more years.

About Massage Therapy:

Massage therapy is one of the oldest methods of healing, as the practice of therapeutic massage can be traced back nearly 4,000 years. Statistics from both Health Canada 1 and the American Massage Therapy Association 2 show that millions of North Americans use it today.

Massage therapy refers to a comprehensive health management strategy focusing on the application of various techniques to positively affect the soft tissues and joints of the body. Massage techniques most commonly include pressure and compression, kneading, friction, and mobilizing to improve the health and condition of the muscles, tendons, skin, fascia or connective tissue of the body.

Today massage is thought of as a holistic therapy that complements medical treatment. The "Physician's Guide to Therapeutic Massage" shows that massage can decrease pain, improve range of motion, improve mood, aid in the circulation of blood and lymph flow, reduce muscle and joint soreness, and improve sleep.

When I do a massage I will occasionally ask if you wish heavier or lighter pressure so that I can provide you with the depth of massage which is most effective for your needs. It is important to communicate with me as we are going through the treatment if you need a change of touch or area so that the treatment time is spend addressing your most important concerns for that day.

I am often asked what the difference is between Swedish Massage and theraputic massage.  Here is an discription of Swedish Massage and you will find that the combination of techniques listed are often found in theraputic massage as well. As I combine many approaches in each treatment I have included this definition with general massage therapy.

In the classical treatment this gentle technique of long strokes, friction, tapping, percussion, vibration and kneading movements are used to release muscle tensions, remove the pain and improve blood circulation. Strokes generally are performed in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart.

Swedish massage reduces stress, both emotional and physical, and is suggested as part of a regular program for stress management. The main purpose of Swedish massage is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles. It also just simply feels good.

Swedish massage shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissue of lactic acid, uric acid and other metabolic wastes. It also has specific clinical uses in a medical or remedial therapy.

DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE:

What is Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep Tissue Massage is a general term covering a range of strategies that deal with assisted muscle release at a deeper level. Other systems that include deep tissue massage are Rolfing, Soma bodywork and Sports Massage.

Neuromuscular massage techniques are employed to detect muscle tissues that have become distressed. Effective manipulation of stiff or painful musculature using specific hand positions, strokes and specifically developed techniques, bring about relief from muscle tensions and increase flexibility. Treatment for low back and shoulder pain, carpal tunnel, sciatica, headaches, knees and neck are amongst the common complaints that Deep Tissue specialists treat.

Micro scarring is caused by injuries and often surgery. This ailment is commonly benefited from this type of therapy. Often the treatment and pressure begins gently and can gradually escalate to points of temporary discomfort. Treatment ranges from generally therapeutic to corrective in nature. Deep tissue massage can cause an increase in muscle strength and length appreciably and rapidly.

Deep Tissue Massage therapy usually involves warming the skin and superficial soft tissue of your body prior to the therapist using greater pressure to access the deeper connected tissue underneath.

Remember that you are always in charge of your treatment and I only use as much pressure as you find tolerable. I will always be checking in with you for how you are managing the  pressure and never push past your comfort zone.

CRANIOSACRAL:

How does CranioSacral Therapy Work?  (from the Upledger Website)

Few structures have as much influence over the body’s ability to function properly as the brain and spinal cord that make up the central nervous system. And, the central nervous system is heavily influenced by the craniosacral system – the membranes and fluid that surround, protect and nourish the brain and spinal cord.

Every day your body endures stresses and strains that it must work to compensate for. Unfortunately, these changes often cause body tissues to tighten and distort the craniosacral system. These distortions can then cause tension to form around the brain and spinal cord resulting in restrictions. This can create a barrier to the healthy performance of the central nervous system, and potentially every other system it interacts with.

Fortunately, such restrictions can be detected and corrected using simple methods of touch. With a light touch, the CST practitioner uses his or her hands to evaluate the craniosacral system by gently feeling various locations of the body to test for the ease of motion and rhythm of the cerebrospinal fluid pulsing around the brain and spinal cord. Soft-touch techniques are then used to release restrictions in any tissues influencing the craniosacral system.

By normalizing the environment around the brain and spinal cord and enhancing the body’s ability to self-correct, CranioSacral Therapy is able to alleviate a wide variety of dysfunctions, from chronic pain and sports injuries to stroke and neurological impairment.

LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE:

What is Lymphatic Drainage massage?

A massage therapist with appropriate training performs a painless and relaxing, whole-body massage. The entire procedure physically stimulates the lymphatic system to move excessive fluids that are associated with the body's lymphatic system. The movement of lymphatic fluid through lymphatic nodes purifies and detoxifies unhealthy fluid that surrounds our connective tissues.

What body conditions can warrant Lyphatic Drainage Massage?

Certified therapists are often referred patients by medical doctors for treatment of acute and chronic lymphedema, neuromuscular disorders, post-mastectomy pain, fibrosis and other conditions. Sports injuries, sprains, strains, post plastic surgery, sinus and congestion problems, dental work, scar tissue reduction and stress are some of the other conditions that can benefit from lymphatic drainage massage.

What functions does the body's lymphatic system perform?

The lymphatic system is composed of assorted size vessels and lymph nodes located throughout the body. There are hundreds of lymph nodes in the body whose function is to filter the lymph fluid. An important part of the body's immune system, lymph fluid contains cells that remove harmful bacteria, viruses and other undesirable substances. The lymphatic fluid system does not have a muscle similar to the heart, which would aid in "pumping" the lymphatic fluid consistently. Therefore, when the lymphatic nodes or vessels become damaged due to surgery, injury or for any other reason, gentle lymphatic drainage massage stimulates the lymphatic fluid flow. Lymph fluid is normally encouraged to flow by the body's natural motion of muscles, organs and other body parts.

Is lymphatic drainage therapy for me?

Some people have more serious medical reasons to receive this massage therapy, however; others regularly receive lymphatic drainage massage to simply aid in the reduction of minor swelling, congestion, headaches, acne and other conditions. Many people wish to encourage their immune system to function as effectively as possible and choose to receive this relaxing therapy.

TRIGGER POINT THERAPY:

About Trigger Point Therapy
What is it?

Trigger point therapy is a bodywork technique first developed by Dr. Janet Travell in the USA in the 1940's. Trigger Point therapy involves applying pressure to tender muscle tissue in order to relieve pain and dysfunction in other parts of the body.

Trigger point therapy is also called myofascial trigger point therapy. Muscle knots are an example of this phenomenon.

What are Trigger Points?

Trigger points refer to the areas of tenderness in a muscle. There are two basic types of trigger points: active and latent. Active trigger points cause muscular pain. Active points will often refer pain and tenderness to another area of the body when pressure is applied. Latent trigger point's only exhibit pain when compressed, they do not refer pain to other areas of the body. Latent trigger points are likely to be one of the causes of stiff joints and restricted range of motion.

Trigger points are different from acupressure points. Acupressure points are concentrations of energy or blockages of the body's energy pathways. Trigger points are physical phenomena that can be felt by touching.

What Causes Trigger Points?

Trigger points have several causes. Some common causes are: birth trauma, an injury sustained in a fall or accident, poor posture, or overexertion.

What is the Purpose of Trigger Point Therapy?

The purpose of trigger point therapy is to eliminate pain and to re-educate the muscles to perform pain-free habits. After several treatments, the swelling and stiffness of neuromuscular pain is reduced. Range of motion is increased, tension is relieved, and circulation, flexibility and coordination are improved.

Interestingly, the pain caused by trigger points is an especially significant cause of disability and loss of time in the workplace. Trigger point therapy and other massage technique are often performed together within a treatment. Specialists in trigger point therapy can help you improve your natural ability to maintain an active lifestyle.

PRENATAL MASSAGE:

Why You Receive Prenatal Massage

The expanding popularity of prenatal massage is a result of the modern tendency to increase levels of well-being, education and opportunity. Your growing and changing shape is one of nature's most incredible occurrences. Knowledgeable pregnancy massage therapists can help you gain the most from this specialized treatment.

Importantly, the prenatal period can be a very stressful physical and emotional time for a mother-to-be. Proper management of stress itself is of great consequence. Clearly documented evidence exists to suggest that very high levels of stress may increase the probability of pre-term labor and lower birth weight of the newborn.

Prenatal massage by a professional offers numerous benefits including but not limited to:

Creates a positive environment of wonderful relaxation and soothing stress relief
Promotes proper postural maintenance to ease physical stress
Provides relief from musculoskeletal strain, aches and pains, muscle spasms and cramps
Increases circulation of the blood & lymph
Reduces edema and blood pressure through promoting better blood circulation.
Increases blood and lymph circulation for increased toxins elimination and immune system funtioning.
Affords welcome release from chronic tension in the neck, shoulders, lower back, abdomen and thighs
Eases childbirth by preparing the muscles used in childbirth
Actively aids in reducing fluid retention, swelling in hands and feet, headaches and sinus problems as well as digestive irregularities.
Helps you to sleep better while reducing fatigue and discomfort caused by physical and emotional stresses. Energy levels and mental alertness increase.

Why is Back Pain so Prevalent?

As your pregnancy advances, several common conditions usually occur.

You will gain weight. Weight gain is normal and good for your baby, however, it can sorely stress your back muscles.
The structures that support your pelvic organs will become more pliant due to hormonal changes, which are naturally intended to prepare your body to give birth. You may experience considerable discomfort in either side of your back as a result.
At the same time, your body's centre of gravity is shifting forward. Your natural tendency is to adjust your posture and the way you move about in everyday activity. Back strain is often the result of this natural change in posture.
As your body adjusts to the tremendous physical and emotional changes taking place in your routine, everyday tasks can lead to incorrect lifting or awkward muscle stretches, which can themselves, become minor injuries and part of back, neck and shoulder pain.

The Prenatal Massage Process

As in most massage therapy, you will fill out a medical history form complete with disclosure of any conditions or complications, which have arisen in the past or as a result of the pregnancy. Together, you and the therapist will execute a treatment strategy that will effectively deal with the conditions you request relief from or help with. This could include exercises you can perform while at home. Your treatment plan will vary according to which trimester you are in.

In general, your pregnancy massage will involve lying comfortably on your side and on your back; the use of pillows to increases your relaxation and comfort and sometimes, a reclining chair that allows you to be your most comfortable for the treatment. My goal is always to customize your therapy to conditions you wish to alleviate or promote.

The type and amount of clothing you wear during massage is your personal choice. Your comfort is paramount. Your body will always be draped or covered other than only that part being gently massaged at the moment. Be comfortable-relax-and enjoy!

Related Massage Therapy - Postpartum Massage

It is time for your body to heal itself, restore most organs and musculature to pre-pregnancy status and recover from the birth process in general. Almost universally practiced and accepted in most cultures in the world, is the practice of massage to aid in post pregnancy recovery and relaxation. Postpartum massage therapy benefits may include:

Wonderful relief from aches, pains and muscle soreness
Helps shrink the uterus and speed recovery through abdominal massage
Soothing comfort and clearing of unhealthy tensions, stress and symptoms of postpartum blues
Provides a 'quiet time' with healing hands specifically trained to relax and invigorate your recovery process
Instruction on appropriate exercises designed to return your body to pre-pregnancy condition.

REIKI

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means " Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy."

A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki sooths the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing.

Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of relaxation and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.

While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to learn and use Reiki. In fact, Reiki is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not. Because Reiki is a sacred energy, many people find that using Reiki puts them more in touch with the experience of their higher self.

REFLEXOLOGY

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a non-invasive natural healing therapy, which is holistic in nature. Holistic therapy is a general term meaning treatment that is therapy for the individuals' body, mind and spirit. Reflexology treats the whole being on various levels. The principles of Reflexology are grounded in a knowledge base that dates to thousands of years, including ancient Egypt and China.

Essentially, the feet and hands are treated according to a knowledgebase that includes the therapists understanding of how the energy in our bodies moves in 'meridians' or zones.

What can this therapy treatment do for me?

Reflexology practioners will provide knowledgeable gentle massage stimulation of nerve endings to increase blood circulation, which leads to elimination of toxins via the lymphatic circulation path. Thus, the body is encouraged to heal itself naturally.

Reduction of stress is achieved due to the deep, satisfying relaxation, which usually occurs during treatment. Our emotions are tied to our body feelings and therefore a state of physical relaxation can produce significant reduction of mental stress.

What is the process?

On your first visit you and your practitioner will discuss what you wish to get out of your therapy. For example, you may discuss relevant information regarding injuries, stress, sleep disorder, illness or disease. Problem areas are noted and treatment begins.

Your treatment is typically one half hour or an hour long depending on what you and the therapist agree upon. Continued dialogue after the first treatment will give your therapist important information on how your body is responding. The goal is to provide safe and effective treatment, which encourages your body to harmonize imbalances and restore the natural healing paths your body requires.
